The Buena Vista River Walk Trail was developed as part of the flood wall project, completed in the 1990s. The trail is owned and well maintained by the city of Buena Vista. The flat gravel trail mostly runs on top of the floodwall and parallels the Maury River and Norfolk Southern Railway for 2.5 miles. Most of the trail has views of the scenic Maury River on one side and the back lots of the industrial heart of Buena Vista on the other side.
There is a parking area at 10th Street, which is the only street that must be crossed the entire length of the trail. There is also parking at 21st Street. Glen Maury Park can easily be accessed from 10th Street, and if you’re looking to add a couple of miles and some elevation to your run you can enter Glen Maury and run up to the double decker pavilion, where you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of Buena Vista, the Blue Ridge, and beyond.
Buena Vista is currently working to establish connections from the River Walk Trail to the Chessie Trail and Appalachian Trail, but currently these routes are unmarked.
