Robinson Gap is a favorite of local runners looking for a quiet road run through the forests with lots of elevation. Starting at Camden Field and turning around at the Appalachian Trail, this challenging 13.1 mile out-and-back is the route for the Hospice Hustle half marathon. You’ll run for about a mile on paved streets in Buena Vista before exiting the city and entering national forest where the road narrows and turns to gravel.
Park at Camden Field, 10th Street and Magnolia, and take 10th Street towards the mountains. Run to the end of 10th Street and turn right on Orange Avenue which turns into Hazel Avenue, which then turns into Robinson Gap Road...then just keep on going. Eventually you’ll pass under the Blue Ridge Parkway and then start heading down for about a mile until you reach the intersection with the Appalachian Trail and Panther Falls Road/311 Park Service Road/Little Irish Creek Road.
There are plenty of opportunities to extend this run by continuing on Robinson Gap Road or by turning it into a loop by taking the Parkway to Rt. 60, or going onto the Appalachian Trail, or the Buena Vista River Walk Trail, etc. etc. If you want to shorten it a little, you can turn back at the Parkway, making it an 11 mile run.
