The scenic and shaded Woods Creek Trail is a favorite of city residents as well as visitors and can be easily accessed from many parts of Lexington. The trail starts at Jordan's Point Park and gains elevation as it goes through the back campuses of VMI and W&L and ends at a little park just past Waddell Elementary School.
The trail surface ranges from gravel to mulch and is generally between 4 and 8 feet wide. While passing through VMI the trail crosses some access roads and you need to pay close attention to stay on the trail, which looks much the same as the access roads. When you cross from VMI into W&L you’ll need to make a sharp left turn and go down a very steep, rather rough section. You’ll also cross an access road on the W&L campus, but there is only one city-street, which must also be crossed.
There are two free city parking lots at Jordan's Point, the beginning of the trail, and another small lot at Lime Kiln Park where the trail crosses Lime Kiln Road. If you plan to access the trail from other points you’ll need to find on-street parking, although you can probably park at Waddell Elementary when school is not in session. There are public restrooms at Jordan's Point.
Woods Creek Trail connects to the Chessie Trail via the Route 11 bridge. Cross the bridge and immediately turn left onto Furrs Mill Road, then turn left again onto the gravel ramp, which leads to the Chessie Trail. This connection is currently unmarked due to a blockage on the initial part of the Chessie. You can detour onto Old Buena Vista Road for 200 feet to bypass the blockage.
